If produced, the Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid will be the most expensive Porsche ever produced to date. Wolfgang Dürheimer, the head of development at Porsche, stated that if 1,000 customers showed interest in buying one, Porsche would consider producing it. According to sources at Wired Magazine more than 2,000 people have “made non-binding expressions of interest” in the 918 Spyder. However, there has been no official decision made by Porsche. The Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid is powered by a 500 horsepower high revving, normally aspirated, 3.4-liter V-8 that, when combined with the 215 horsepower onboard electric motors, thus making over 700 horsepower at the wheels. According to Porsche, the 918 Spyder will do 0-62 in less than 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 198 mph. “This car can lap the Nürburgring faster than the Carrera GT” – Wolfgang Dürheimer. With a lap tim less than 7:30, it can. It’s eco-friendly as well. When driven conservatively in hybrid mode, Porsche says the 918 will get 94mpg with only 70g/km of CO2 from the pipes. CEO Michael Macht claims, Porsche has never made a concept car that wasn’t put into production. And, with “2000 expressions of interest”, we have to believe they’ll hit their mark.
